Background of the Study
Aquaculture, the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants, plays a critical role in ensuring food security, creating employment, and promoting economic growth. In Nigeria, aquaculture has emerged as a vital sector to bridge the gap between fish demand and supply, as wild fish stocks decline due to overfishing and environmental degradation. Sustainable aquaculture ensures that fish farming practices are environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially equitable, contributing to the long-term health of aquatic ecosystems and food production systems.
Government policies are crucial in shaping the growth of sustainable aquaculture by providing a regulatory framework, financial incentives, and technical support to fish farmers. In Nigeria, various government initiatives, such as the Agricultural Promotion Policy and the National Aquaculture Strategy, aim to improve the sustainability of the sector. However, challenges such as inadequate enforcement of regulations, limited access to funding, and weak institutional support hinder the effectiveness of these policies. This study examines the role of government policies in promoting sustainable aquaculture practices in Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of aquaculture to address food security challenges in Nigeria, unsustainable practices such as water pollution, habitat destruction, and over-reliance on fish meal inputs persist. These practices not only threaten the environment but also undermine the long-term viability of the sector. While government policies have been established to support sustainable aquaculture, their implementation and impact remain questionable due to weak enforcement mechanisms and limited stakeholder engagement. This study investigates the role and effectiveness of government policies in promoting sustainable aquaculture practices in Nigeria.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of government policies in promoting sustainable aquaculture in Nigeria.
To identify challenges faced in implementing sustainable aquaculture policies.
To recommend strategies for improving policy implementation and promoting sustainable aquaculture in Nigeria.
